If you are reading this in 2020, then you know it has been a long and challenging year. From a global pandemic, to massive social unrest, political upheavals, job loss, death, oh gosh the list just keeps getting longer and longer.

However, if you have been on earth for as long as I have (40 years at the time of this article) then you know there will always be challenging times.  Times were we as human beings are not sure if we will make it or survive.  Times were we feel uncertain, ungrounded, internally conflicted, and overall unhappy.

Here is what I know to be true, “tough times don’t last, but tough people do”. Now I know that quote has been used many times over the years, but it’s true.  The only thing that lasts forever is change; circumstance no matter how dire will eventually change.

The question is, how do we maintain our peace through these changing times? Well I have 3 techniques that I use and that I teach my clients to use in order to find their peace and keep going.


  1. Acknowledge what you can and cannot control – You have the power to control yourself, your feelings, your beliefs, and how you respond to situations.  However you do not have the ability to control the outside world directly.  Be willing to focus on controlling yourself and your immediate environment.  When we stop trying to control everything around us and instead focus on ourselves we feel much better about our circumstances and can maintain our inner peace.
  2. Be willing to detach – When it comes to finding your peace, sometimes you must remove and separate yourself from anything that is the opposite of peace.  This means detaching yourself (even temporarily) from any person, place, or condition that you perceive as toxic, abusive, unhealthy, or causes depression or anxiety.  You may need to stop watching the news for awhile, take a break from social media, put your phone on silent or stop talking to certain people. The bottom line, detach yourself from the negativity and reclaim your peace.
  3. Write out your peace – Sit down, take a sheet of paper or journal, and write out what you consider a peaceful experience. It can be writing about a specific day that made you feel at peace or just an ideal that would make you feel more peaceful.  For example, maybe writing about taking a walk on a beach or writing about sipping coco and reading a book.  The point is to allow the creative parts of your brain to activate and let your mind think about the peaceful experience.  The result is that you will not only feel more peaceful emotionally, your body will start to show signs of calm.  I.e. your heart rate will decrease, your breathing will slow, your blood pressure may stabilize and the muscles in your body may start to relax.  This technique has a psychological as well as a physiological effect on the mind and body.

These techniques will help you to destress, calm down, and find peace of mind during uncertain and stressful times.  Be willing to allow the peace that you can control to flow into your life and remember that tough times will eventually pass. Yes, even during crazy times you still have the power to find your peace!
