Learning how to make affirmations work is important for anyone looking to manifest their dream life.

If you have watched or read The Secret, Think and Grow Rich for Women, You Can Heal Your Life, or any book that includes the idea of manifesting, you may already understand the concept of affirmations.

These books are all by different authors but one theme that they all share is the idea of manifesting or creating your life with the use of affirmations.

How Do Affirmations Work?

For those of you that are new to the concept, an affirmation in this context is the act of affirming a positive belief for yourself.

Here are a few examples of affirmations – “I am a winner”, “I love myself”, “I am a confident woman”.

From a psychological perspective, saying affirmations helps to reprogram the subconscious mind to believe that the affirmation about yourself is true.  It’s kind of like self-esteem marketing for your brain.

Think about a commercial – when you are watching tv how many times have you seen the same commercial or various commercials for the same company play over and over again.

After a while, you might start to become interested in the product that the commercial is featuring or the service that the commercial is offering.

Marketing experts know that most audiences need to see a commercial 3-5 times before they believe it can work for them or at least be willing to learn more.

The reason is that marketing experts understand psychology and they know that when the human brain sees, hears, or experiences a concept over and over and over again it starts to become ingrained in their mind.

You are literally getting programmed like a computer.  It’s the same concept with affirmations, when you say something positive about yourself over and over and over, your brain starts to get programmed to believe this idea to be true.

The affirmation is meant to reprogram the mind so that you manifest a new belief.  Then that belief becomes a habitual thought.

Once you start to think about a subject the mind starts to notice everything that is associated with that subject.  That is the beginning of you getting into 3-d reality what it is you are affirming.

How Long Does It Take for Affirmations to Work?

Affirmations have been known to help people build self-esteem, confidence, higher self-image, lose weight, achieve goals, make more money, and possibly help during illness.

Affirmations can train your mind to start thinking in a way that helps you take action and start manifesting or creating the life that you want to live.

The amount of time that it takes to make affirmations work varies on the level of your belief in the affirmation.  Belief is what gives the mind faith and supports a person’s behavior.

Meaning if you believe you love yourself then you will quickly start to change your behavior to show yourself love.

Or if you believe you deserve a new job, you may be more likely to start updating your resume and applying for new jobs.

Timing also depends on what type of affirmation you create for yourself.  If you create an affirmation that is difficult for you to believe this creates resistance in your mind.

Meaning that you are less likely to manifest with your affirmation because it’s too extreme for your mind to believe that it can be true or possible.

For example if everyday you say that you are a millionaire but you are making $20, 000 a year it may be difficult to believe that you could be a millionaire.

There may not even be proof that you could someday become a millionaire. And if your environment doesn’t at all support what you are saying it’s hard to convince your mind that it’s possible.

So timing also depends on how you create your affirmations.

How to Make Affirmations Work Faster

Here are 5 steps to giving your affirmations a power boost so that you can get what you want fast:

  1. Write a list of what you want
  2. Write resistance-free affirmations
  3. Use all your senses
  4. Visualize
  5. Say thank you and let go

Let’s dive deeper into this process.

1. Write a List of What You Want

First, write a list of the results that you want to have.  For example do you want to build confidence, do want to lose weight, do you want to make more money, do you want a new job, do you want to meet the love your life or do want more peace in your life?

What do you want?  What result do you want to have?  You have to know what your trying to achieve before you can create an affirmation.

2. Write a Resistance Free Affirmation

Second, pick one of the topics you wrote on the list and write an affirmation that you can actually believe at this point in time.

For example, if you are making $20,000 a year and you want to make more money, don’t write the affirmation, “I am a millionaire” that’s too much of a stretch.

Write the affirmation in a way that is a step up but not so extreme that you don’t believe it’s possible.

For example, you could write, “I have the ability to figure out a way to make more money” or “I believe it’s possible for me to increase my income” or “It is safe for me to make more money” or “I am open to receiving financial abundance”.

You notice in those affirmations I don’t specify a dollar amount.  And I used phrases like “the ability”, “it’s safe” and “I am open”.

These are words that gently suggest a general idea to your mind that more money can come in but it does not give a definite way that it has to come in or a definite amount of how much can come in.

Meaning that it does not feel aggressive or forced, it feels possible.

3. Use All Your Senses

The third way to make affirmations work for you is to say them out loud preferably in front of a mirror. The reason that this works is because similar to a commercial – you are using all of your senses to take in the information.

You are using your voice to verbalize, ears to listen and your eyes to see yourself saying the affirmation.  So you are literally using most of your physical senses to experience the affirmation.

If you really want to step this sensory process up you can also light a candle, put on some lotion or perfume that you like that smells good, then put your hand over your heart as say the affirmation out loud in the mirror.

This can be right after you get out of the shower in the morning or at night before you go to bed.  This boosts the sensory experience so that you are including your sense of smell and touch.

The more you do this the more your brain will associate the affirmation with feeling clean, smelling good, and feeling the beat of your heart which are real-time events.

This helps the mind connect the affirmation to a real experience.  Not only are you reprograming your brain you are indulging in self-care.

4. Visualize

The fourth way is to close your eyes after you say your affirmations and visualize yourself having the thing, feeling or experience that you desire.  Visualize the end result.

In the money example, you could visualize yourself paying off a debt that you owe, or you could visualize yourself working at a new job making more money, or you could visualize yourself donating money to a charity because you have more to give.

This does not need to be long, only about 20 seconds.  This again helps the mind to believe that the affirmation is real.

If you have several affirmations about different topics then visualize what your life would look like if you received all that you are affirming.

5. Say Thank You and Let Go

Lastly – say thank you and let go. Say thank you then insert your name and any other person or spiritual word that you want to insert.  For example, I could say, “thank you Tiffiny”.

Or I could say thank you Tiffiny, thank you Universe, thank you God, thank you earth, thank you ancestors, and so on.  Do whatever makes you feel at peace. Giving gratitude adds emotion to the experience as the feeling of thankfulness boosts joy.

Then let go- Let go of trying to control when, how, or where you are going to receive what it is your affirming.  Just allow yourself to be present in that moment.

Feel the calm and peace of that moment.  Breath and go on with your day or night.
