There are many different time management techniques, but which technique is the best technique?

Have you ever had a day where you started with the best intentions to get all your work done but for whatever reason you just couldn’t stay focused enough? Then by the end of the day you couldn’t figure out where the time went?

Well trust me I’ve been there and had to learn how to make the best use of my time. Time more than anything is our most valuable asset so we must use it wisely.

When I am coaching my one-on-one clients, this is one of the major issues they have with working toward their goals. I show them the value of keeping a schedule that truly supports the overall vision for their life.

A big part of that schedule is understanding how to manage their time on a daily basis. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method and tool that helps keep you on task. It’s one of the best time management techniques I’ve found!

WHAT IS THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE?

The Pomodoro (which means tomato in Italian) Technique was created in the 1800s by Francesco Cirillo using a kitchen timer.

The basic concept of the technique is to work in 25-minute intervals with a 5-minute break between each interval. After 4 of these work/break intervals you will take a longer break for 15-20 minutes

 So, for example:

  1. Work 25 minutes, 5-minute break
  2. Work 25 minutes, 5-minute break
  3. Work 25 minutes, 5-minute break
  4. Work 25 minutes, 15-20-minute break
  5. Repeat 1-4

With this method you get in total about 2 hours of focused work time.

The Benefits of the Pomodoro Technique

  • This time management technique can be used for any task, from working on your computer, to working on a school project, to cleaning the house, to budgeting your finances.
  • It keeps your brain active just long enough to be stimulated but also accounts for mental fatigue by adding in the breaks. This keeps your brain feeling refreshed, recharged, and energized.
  • It increases intrinsic motivation because it encourages you to push yourself just for a short period of time with a reward (the break) at the end. Similar to the overall concept of operant conditioning and positive reinforcement.
  • It helps you control distractions. I literally will use this technique during my workday and use my 5-minute break to look at Pinterest or Facebook (lol). It really helps to minimize my social media time without having to completely give up my guilty pleasure!

Variations

The Pomodoro Technique is flexible as it can be adjusted to fit your specific needs. For example, if you want to work in 45-minute intervals with a 15-minute break or if you prefer 50-minute intervals with a 10-minute break.  You can change the timing to fit whatever task you need to complete.

There are also countless fee Pomodoro timer apps at the Google or Apple store. If you don’t have access to an app – just go old school and use an alarm or clock timer.

Once you start using the Pomodoro Technique your life will totally change for the better!
