I remember a time when I prided myself on working SUPER HARD in my corporate career and volunteer organizations.  I would be willing to stay up all night, work after hours and work on the weekends to help others.

People would always tell me what a “powerhouse” I was, and how “focused” I was, and how they love working with me because they knew I would get “the work done”.  It was nice to be recognized for how hard I was working and trust me when I say, I really was working hard!!

However, when it came to me getting up early or staying late to work on my own business or personal goals, I’d find every excuse as to why I could not start. I would procrastinate or tell myself I wasn’t ready, or I didn’t know enough or I really wasn’t as good a people said I was and so on, and so on.

The truth was, when it came to going after my own dreams and standing firm in my expertise and knowledge, I felt like an imposter a fraud.  I felt like I wasn’t as smart as everyone said I was it was as if the person people were describing wasn’t really me.  The thought of stepping out as an “expert” in my field was frightening. 

So, with these limiting beliefs, I held back from going strong toward my dreams for a long time.  It didn’t know it then, but I was suffering from imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is concept that describes how you can doubt your abilities, talents and gifts.  Even when you are given praise and accolades for your accomplishments.  It affects many high achieving women and is usually associated with some level of low self-esteem or confidence. It can paralyze your efforts toward achieving your goals.

There are so many women who go through the exact same scenario and don’t even realize how much they are shortchanging themselves when it comes to their own value.  Thankfully, imposter syndrome can be defeated.

3 Ways to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

  1. It’s important to write down all of your accomplishments over the years.  The things you did that you are really proud of and experiences that made you a stronger person.
  2. Take note of all your knowledge, skills, talents and abilities that you acquired through education and hands-on experience.
  3. Get a coach or mentor to keep you accountable and create and action plan to move forward faster.

It takes time, but it is well worth it to stop feeling like an imposter in your own life.  When you can overcome imposter syndrome and start using your own energy to be a “powerhouse” in your own life, you will reap rewards that you never expected.
